Intramural Skills Review, Week 2 of 6

HOMEWORK  (Links to videos for demonstration here)

  1.  Watch 20 minutes of a basketball game (middle school level or above)
  2.  Perform the following 3 to 4 days this week (REPETITION IS KEY!):

If you have wall-to-wall carpet, practice on one knee in the bathroom.  Try to dribble without looking at the ball.  Get it done!  TWO WORDS:  WORK HARD!  TWO MORE WORDS:  NO EXCUSES!

  • DRIBBLING: KNEES BENT, BUTT DOWN, BACK STRAIGHT
  • Stationary Dribble on strong hand:  Three 30 -60 second intervals
  • Stationary Dribble on weak hand:  Three 30 -60 second intervals
  • Stationary Cross-over dribble (v-shape):  Three 30 -60 second intervals
  • Shooting form at home:  Lay on back.  Strong hand is in back of ball; weak hand is on side.  Extend and release.  Straight shots are 2 points each.  Must get 20 points each day.
  • Layup form at home (see on-court video clip):   Can be done through a home’s room doorway. Do at least 20x each day:
    • Right-hand layup/2-step, run-up drill:Take 1st step with right foot, then 2nd step with left foot, then raise right leg, and right hand toward top of door entrance to simulate ball release.  At this point player should be jumping off the left foot, with right leg and right hand extending up. Summary: right, left/jump “up” motion
    • Left-hand layup/2-step, run-up drill:Take 1st step with left foot, then 2nd step with right foot, then raise left leg, and left hand toward top of door entrance to simulate ball release.  At this point player should be jumping off the right foot with left leg and left hand extending up. Summary: left, right/jump “up” motion

  • Week 1 items (brief)
  • Violations:  travel, double dribble, foul (during warm-ups)setAPick101
  • Lay-ups  (see video demonstration)
  • Defense:  Pass denial (defense away from ball)
  • Drills:  “keep away”, full-court dribbling, backdoor cuts, shooting
  • Introduction:  Setting and using picks (half-court pairs at 5 points), “kick” pass; running iso- plays
