Coatesville, PA – (Sunday, April 22) – After winning the MEAC Classic the previous weekend at DeSales University, the ESYC Elite 13u (A Team) arrived in Coatesville as the top-seeded team for the Mid-Atlantic District Championships. Somebody forgot to tell the other teams that; the competition was fierce from the start, and ESYC needed double-overtime to win it’s first game in pool play against MCB.
In their first game, ESYC used some timely big shots from point guard Josh Snead, and a dominant performance on the offensive glass spearheaded by MEAC Classic MVP, Amir Griffin, along with Sam Iorio — to survive the early scare. It was a hard-earned win.
The second game of the day paired ESYC against the hot-shooting Central Bucks Warriors — who had already beaten MCB. Trailing at halftime, ESYC used a tenacious man-to-man defense to cool down the hot shooters for Central Bucks. On the offensive side ESYC used its substansial size advantage to wear down the opponent, and centers — Jayone Duggan, Jaxon Costelllo and Jack Zamiecheli — combined for huge numbers allowing ESYC to pull away late for another hard fought victory (74-60).
After going 2-0 on Saturday, ESYC would face a familiar foe in team Deja-Vu at Sunday’s quarterfinals.
ESYC Elite and Deja-Vu played earlier this AAU season in Harrisburg at the Super Regional. ESYC won handily, but the coaching staff from Deja-Vu complained about bad referreeing and the team playing flat. However, this weekend Deja-Vu was coming off a huge championship at the Atlantic City Basketball Spotlight Showcase in the Blue Division Easter weekend. But even with it’s new swagger, the only thing Deja-Vu could complain about this time was the hot shooting back-court of J’von (JJ) Winslow and William Melson, assisted with the combined effort of the guards who shot 8 three-pointers — with five in the first-half alone!
The tone was set, and ESYC took a 16-point lead into halftime. Thanks to another double-double by “do everything’ guard/forward Amir Griffin, ESYC never looked back — winning big again (72-43) — sending ESYC Elite to the District Final Four scheduled for May 11th and 12th.
ESYC Elite to play in Allentown on May 4 through May 6!
Coach Jason Boggs said afterwards that when this team came together it had a chance to be real special. Now they will have a chance to lay claim to the best 13u team in the state of PA as they go on to play the storied AAU Club York Ballers in the District semi-finals. Local fans in the Lehigh Valley will have a chance to support this all-area team as the ESYC Elite can be seen in action at it’s own Tournament (May 4 through May 6) at the First Annual Jay Radio Invitational.
